Frequently Asked Questions

How do I hire workers?
It’s easy. Call the Workers’ Center at (206) 229-2272 or (206) 354-4975 and place an order.
Call from 6:00 am - 11:00 am during office hours to talk to a live person (7:00 - 12:00 Saturdays).
If you reach a recording during that time, we are talking on the other line. Leave a message, and we will get back to you. Place an order at least a day in advance and we will drop off workers at your door.

How much do I pay the worker?
The workers have collectively developed a salary scale. The hourly wage starts at $12 per hour, and may be higher, depending on the difficulty and skill required for the job. Tips are always welcome. For more information, please view our Pay Scale Information Sheet (pdf). The staff at the Center can also help you determine the appropriate minimum wage for different jobs. Workers must be hired for a minium of five hours.

Where does my money go?
The workers keep 100% of their pay. CASA Latina does not take a commission or receive any money from its workers. Transportation fees are paid to CASA Latina and help offset the cost of the driver. If you would like to make a donation to support the programs of CASA Latina, please click here.

Do I have to pick up the worker?
We have a transportation service; for a small fee, we can drop off workers anywhere in Seattle and its suburbs. The fee for this service is $5 per worker (maximum fee is $15); for destinations outside of Seattle an additional charge of $5 applies. When you hire workers you will be informed about the availability and cost of the transportation service. Please be sure to pay the driver when she or he arrives; you may pay by cash or check (made out to CASA Latina).

Why hire workers from the Day Workers' Center?
We are a no-commission center; there is no administration charge for contracting our workers. Because we are an established organization, we have interpreters to help with any job issues that may arise. We also have guidelines for workers using our center, such as no drugs, alcohol, or fighting.

What can the workers do for me?
We have workers of all trades and experience. Besides construction and manual labor, we can help with moving services, cleaning, handiwork, painting, landscaping, etc. We can be contracted for a half day (five hour minimum), a day, a week or permanently.

Who are the workers at the Center?
Primarily, we are from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. We are men and women of all ages and trades. Some of us are newly arrived; others have been here longer but have recently become unemployed.

Why do the workers choose the Day Workers' Center?
We are here because we need work. Out of respect for ourselves and others we prefer to be contracted from an organized center instead of waiting in the streets. We believe that together, working within a group, we have a better chance of being hired for work and being treated with respect, as we respect our community and employers.

What if I have more questions?
Call the Workers’ Center at (206) 229-2272 between 6:00 am and 11:00 am on Mondays through Fridays, and on Saturdays between 7:00 am and 12:00 pm to talk to a live person. We will be happy to answer your questions.

Help the Day Workers' Center improve!
You will receive an evaluation card for each worker you hire. Please fill out the card and send it in, both to help us improve and to let us know about good experiences.
